May 24, 2016 · Tunnelblick versus Viscosity. viscosity is a paid other option to Tunnelblick and it gives a rich client interface to making, altering, and controlling VPN associations. Essentially, it performs the same occupation as Tunnelblick, yet il looks more pleasant. Most VPN service providers supply "tun" connections, so usually Tunnelblick does not use any of its kernel extensions. In any case, Tunnelblick never installs kernel extensions; it dynamically loads them only while they are needed (when a VPN is connected) and unloads them when they are no longer needed (i.e. when the VPN is disconnected). Click on a .ovpn files that you downloaded to open it in Tunnelblick. Click the Tunnelblick icon to choose the server you want to connect to. Insert your credentials and click OK. You can view your credentials for the VPN in the Customer Area > Services. Note that credentials are case sensitive. You are connected. A possibly better idea than messing around with openvpn directly (Tunnelblick is basically just a fancy GUI around it) would be to use an Applescript, something that can definitely be launched from the terminal (i.e. with osascript)
